All of us have been adjusting how we live our lives or how we conduct business in light of Covid-19. As Governor Pritzker makes changes to what is allowable in the foreseeable future, it will require us to remain fluid and flexible. For many, the “new normal” has been a slowing down, a reprioritizing, a time for reflection. For Spesia & Taylor attorney Brad McCann, the “new normal” has included implementing a protocol to allow his estate and corporate clients to complete their plans.
McCann says that pre-Covid, he would meet with his estate and corporate clients initially, but oftentimes it would be awhile before he could get them back to finalize documents. “Now,” he says, “it seems that there is a sense of urgency, especially with some of my clients who are in their 70s and above.” McCann attributes this sense of urgency to the climate of uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. His clients want to “ensure that they have everything in order,” feeling the need to complete their plans outweighs the risk.
In light of the risks presented by Covid-19, McCann has modified his client-meeting procedures and put new protocols in place to ensure everyone’s safety. These procedures, which are strictly followed, include a lot of preparation prior to the actual meeting. Clients spend no time in a waiting area and meeting room surfaces and meeting participants’ hands are sanitized both before and after the consultation. Documents are prepared and placed in the meeting room ahead of time. McCann sits at least six-feet away from the client, and any necessary staff stand within view but outside the meeting room to witness any required signature(s). Brad has observed that these additional measures have put clients at ease, and many have expressed gratitude that he showed “concern for their safety and time.”
Brad McCann and the other attorneys at Spesia & Taylor have been proactive in their response to the challenges presented by Covid-19.
